Vitrathene manufactures specialist, hi-tech plastic sheets for specialist hi-tech applications. We supply the medical, automotive, aerospace and defence industries with tailor-made solutions to their unique problems. We can make sheets from 1.6mm to 50mm thick and in sizes up to 3000x1500mm.
Low Volume Specialist sheets
Most plastics sheets are made by melt extrusion, a process that requires high temperatures and large through-puts to be efficient, but Vitrathene can make a 200x100cm board at 25mm thick using just 60kg of plastic. Our unique and proprietary processing technology creates the minimum of waste and for low volume applications, cannot be bettered. We can also include particulate or other additives without the need for large volume pre-compounding. We work with development scientists in both the polymer industries and their wide range of customers’ technologies.
Crosslinked Plastic Sheets
Our technology allows us to make crosslinked plastic sheets which require long exposure to temperatures up to 200 0C. Many of these specialist sheets have been developed by our customers under mutual confidentiality agreements.
Shielding
The nuclear, defence and medical industries use an increasingly varied range of sources of high energy, from which operatives and the public and delicate equipment must be shielded. For over 20 years Vitrathene has produced shielding materials that protect against primary and secondary neutrons. Most of these have been developed by chemists and technologists at Vitrathene in joint development programmes with customers, academia and research institutions.
